His change in mind-set has been second to none. His growth has included 75 prevention classes. And he’s proven to himself with small wins, the amazing things he can achieve with being prepared and finding solutions to overcome barriers.

On August 2 he ticked off his Dream Big goal of completing a half-marathon (21km). I was fortunate enough to be able to run alongside Zach on the day—an experience I’ll never forget. To see his mum Aleisha out completing the 10km event, is testament to the influence that his actions have had in helping and empowering others around him. It’s been a privilege to be part of his journey—and witness him lead the way from the early days on the Pilates reformer, to running a half marathon.

So what can we learn from Zach’s story?

In each moment we have the capacity to use reason and make choices in our lives—to change the direction the wind blows. And this is good for careers, relationships, and our own minds. With the guidance of everyone at PEAK, Zach’s done this. He’s developed habits and knowledge to navigate in this world of possible experiences—ones he previously never thought possible.

One of the treatment rooms at PEAK Hawthorne will be named ‘Zach Connellan’ in 2021. We can’t wait to see his story inspire other athletes in 2021 and beyond.
