What is Active Release Technique?
Active Release Technique (ART) is a hands-on treatment in which muscle, ligament, fascia, tendon, nerve, or capsule is held with tension on the tissue involved in a shortened position, while the tissue is lengthened through a full, comfortable range of active motion and tension maintained throughout the movement.
How Does Active Release Technique Work?
Active Release Technique works by restoring the normal and functional range of motion in the tissues it is applied to. When certain tissues in our body are subject to repetitive strain or prolonged load, oxygen can be reduced which can lead to the development of painful and tight adhesions. These restrictions can be restored by applying tension to the area while simultaneously actively moving the tissue into a lengthened position
Effects
Physiological Effects of Active Release Technique
- Improved range of movement
- Reduced pain
- Reduced tightness
- Increased blood flow
- Improved motor control
- Increased muscle activation
Benefits of Active Release Technique
Active Release Technique can help to improve range of motion, muscle activation, blood flow and reduce pain and tightness in the area it is applied to. This can assist in restoring our normal movement patterns and help relieve the effects of repetitive strain and loads.
When to Use Active Release Technique
ART is a popular treatment technique for a range of conditions, in particular, conditions that have developed due to prolonged loads and repetitive strain.
Active Release Technique For Elbow Pain
ART can be useful in the treatment of elbow pain conditions like: tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow.
Active Release Technique For Neck Pain
Neck pain can be relieved with the use of Active Release Technique, it can help with neck pain contributed from whiplash, postural syndromes and desk workers by helping reduce tension and stiffness.
Active Release Technique For Lower Back Pain
Active Release Technique can help improve pain and restore normal range of movement in low back pain sufferers by reducing soft tissue restrictions and muscle tightness.
What Happens In An Active Release Massage?
Our PEAK practitioners will utilise Active Release Technique after they have thoroughly assessed you and deem it will help you relieve your pain or move you closer to your goals.
Your practitioner will apply direct hands-on pressure and tension to the site of restriction and while this is performed, the tissues will be lengthened by getting you to actively move your body in a specific direction.
This may be performed multiple times to help restore the tissues normal range of movement.

FAQS Frequently Asked Questions
Active Release Technique is unique as it combines the examination with the treatment. The ART practitioner will use their hands to evaluate texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendon, ligaments and nerves. The abnormal tissues are then treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.
ART can be performed within our normal appointment times which range from 30 minutes to 60 minutes depending on the type of appointment (initial, standard or extended appointment)
Overuse conditions occur when soft tissues are subject to repetitive strain or prolonged loads. This can reduce the overall blood supply to these tissues which can then lead to injury, tension or trigger points.
