Overview
What is Pregnancy Massage?
Pregnancy or prenatal massage is used to reduce swelling and stress and to relieve muscle pain in pregnant women. This type of massage includes techniques such as effleurage and longitudinal strokes more than trigger point massage. As your pregnancy progresses your PEAK Massage Therapist will provide you with pillows and bedding toppers to make the treatment more comfortable.
What Will A Pregnancy Massage Treatment Include?
- Effleurage/Longitudinal Gliding – This is a traditional massage technique that follows the lines of the muscle which increases blood flow to the area and helps flush fluid dispersion from the area and reduce inflammation and swelling.
- Myofascial Release – This massage technique is stretching the fascia. Your fascia is located between your skin and the underlying structure of bone and muscle.
- Trigger Point Therapy – This massage technique is when pressure is applied to a specific area of the muscle (or commonly known as a knot) for a non-specific amount of time to relief pain and dysfunction.
- PNF Stretching – This massage technique is a combination of passive stretching and isometrics with a muscle.
Is Massage Safe In Early Pregnancy
Massage Therapy is safe to receive while you are in your first trimester provided that you do not have any known risk factors that would classify you as high risk. These include factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, severe morning sickness, pre-eclampsia, or previous history of miscarriage. It is recommended that you consult with your GP prior to having a massage treatment if you suspect you may have any risk factors.
What Can Pregnancy Massage Be Used For?
Pregnancy Massage is a popular treatment option for a range of conditions including neck pain, lower back pain and swelling in legs. Below are some conditions that Pregnancy Massage can help with:
Foot Massage During Pregnancy
Foot Massage can help reduce swelling and pain in your feet during pregnancy. Light to medium pressure is applied around the feet and into the legs.
Back Massage During Pregnancy
Back pain is common during pregnancy due to the body’s natural changes and extra weight that it is being carried. Pregnancy Massage can assist by calming the tense muscles and relaxing the area.
Hip Massage During Pregnancy
Hip and glute tension during pregnancy is common due to the body’s natural changes as the anatomy of the hips begins to widen. Pregnancy Massage through this area can help relieve tension and increase mobility.
Neck Massage During Pregnancy
Neck pain and headaches can be common through pregnancy. A Pregnancy Massage can help relieve the pain in the area by applying light to medium pressure around the area to relax the muscles that are in spasm.
