Why is reduced bone density common in women around menopause?
Approximately 40% of postmenopausal women have been or will be diagnosed as osteopenic. The after effects of menopause cause women to experience declines in vitamin D, calcium and estrogen which have important roles in bone health. It’s been previously found that age related declines in bone mass can begin roughly around the age of 40. More often than not pharmaceutical drugs are a common method used to treat low BMD (bone mineral density), however this doesn’t address other potential risk factors that contribute to the growing fracture rates. These factors include strenght, balance and proprioception, functional capacity and diet.
What are the benefits of exercise on bone density?
As a result of these growing risk factors, research has uncovered that guided resistance training has benefits in increasing muscle strength and bone mineral density. This form of training is encouraged to incorporate the use of free weights, isometrics, resistance bands and low amplitude impact loads, just to name a few. Completing this form of training to a minimum of 3 days per week will initiate the best results.
PEAK offers prevention classes in which you can join to get an individualised program tailored to your strength and fitness levels. These are supervised by our physiotherapy coaches to ensure the proper technique and loads are undertaken. Our coaches can also help formulate a program that can be completed either at home or at your own gym where regular check-ins are organised to track your progress.
If you’re struggling to find a place to start your preventative journey, why not begin with our coaches here at PEAK. Our prevention classes offer you the best opportunity to achieve these results with an added element of social interactions with your fellow athletes!
