Mike routinely commits to marathons throughout the year, strategically trying to incorporate his love for travel in the process. Over the festive period Mike participated in the Honolulu Marathon which has breathtaking mountain views. Prior to this event Mike worked his way through the Abbots World Majors, which consists of 6 major marathons that are located in different parts of the world! The six majors are located in Tokyo, Boston, Berlin, Chicago, New York and London.
Here are some questions we asked Mike on his why and how he stays motivated to achieve such an outstanding goal:
What is your ‘why’ behind wanting to achieve 100 marathons?
Why 100? A few years back, when I had run 36 odd marathons, a friend asked me, are you going to stop at 40? I replied, no I’d like to think 50 is a better number. Now that I find myself at 83 marathons, 90 sounds too close, 100 seems realistic.
What do you enjoy most about running?
I enjoy the meditation of distance races, one’s mind goes quiet and stresses are dissolved.
Do you have any tips for motivation when trying to achieve such goals?
I like to travel to marathons. I book them in advance so I know I have to get out there. I always know I can finish and then have a holiday. How many cities have you been to where the locals come out and cheer for you, doesn’t get better than that.
Mike has recently finished the sixth major in London whilst unknowingly contracting COVID on his travels! After 9 years, we would like to congratulate you on completing all six and we look forward to helping fuel the passion to continue and see it to the end. Next up, Vancouver Marathon!
