Overview

What Is An Anti Gravity Treadmill?

The Anti-Gravity treadmill is a service which utilises unique gravity-defying technology to redefine what’s possible in physical rehabilitation, helping people move from pain, through prevention and onwards to performance.

How Does An AlterG Treadmill Work?

After calibrating and weighing to your dimensions, the Anti-Gravity treadmill utilises air pressure to fill the chamber surrounding the treadmill. This is controlled by using a specialised pair of shorts, worn over your exercise attire. This pressure can then be altered to reduce your body weight by up to as much as 80 percent.

What Conditions Can An AlterG Treadmill Help With?

An AlterG treadmill is suitable for a range of conditions:

At PEAK, our patients often use the Anti Gravity treadmill to help treat their knee pain, particularly if it is running related. Being able to decrease the amount of load that travels through the knee is very effective for returning to pain free running as soon as possible. This allows our patients to continue training whilst they follow through with their treatment and rehabilitation. Perfect if there’s an upcoming race or event with a tight timeframe!

Anti gravity treadmill is used for:

  • Joint pain
  • Muscle injury rehab
  • Tendon and ligament injury rehab
  • Performance running recovery
  • Running load management
  • Post surgical rehab
  • Weight loss
  • Getting back into running

Benefits

Benefits of An AlterG Treadmill

Evidence surrounding the Anti-Gravity treadmill has proven:

  • VO2 max can still be achieved whilst running at a decreased bodyweight
  • Decreased body weight during running resulted in a decreased ground reaction force - lessening load on joints.
  • Running economy can be improved due to decreased body weight - allowing for easier running at higher speeds for longer.
  • Removal up to 20% of body weight does not alter metabolic and cardiac training responses during running - allowing for comparable training intensity, but at a decreased impact load on the lower limb joints.
